Treating Fire Service Professionals

The purpose of this training is to help clinicians, treatment providers and other community partners develop cultural competency in the fire service and first responder professions as to be best equipped to provide effective behavioral health services to fire fighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers and emergency dispatchers. This event will include information about day-to-day life at the fire house and the potential impact of aspects of the job on well-being, such as exposure to trauma, shift schedules and mental health stigmas. This presentation will provide insight into the most common behavioral health issues experienced by fire service members, substance abuse trends among this unique population, and treatment techniques that have proved successful at the Center of Excellence. We’ll break down the main types of treatment you’ll hear about—skills-based work, talk therapy, and trauma-focused approaches—and where specific modalities like EMDR fit in (and when they don’t). You’ll leave with a clear picture of what therapy should look like when it’s done well, what red flags to watch for, and how to advocate for the kind of help that matches the job and the person doing it.

Psychological Safety, Workplace Incivility, and Institutional Betrayal: Organizational Factors Shaping Mental Health in First Responders

This webinar explores how organizational culture shapes the mental wellbeing of fire service members, with a focus on three critical and often interconnected factors: psychological safety, workplace incivility, and institutional betrayal. While much attention has been placed on the impact of traumatic exposure in this field, emerging evidence highlights that the internal work environment can be just as influential in driving stress, burnout, and long-term mental health outcomes. Participants will examine how psychological safety, or the ability to speak up, ask for help, and admit mistakes without fear of negative consequences, serves as a protective factor for both individual wellbeing and team performance. In contrast, workplace incivility, including subtle disrespect, dismissiveness, and lack of support, can erode trust and contribute to cumulative stress. The webinar will also address institutional betrayal, which occurs when organizations fail to prevent harm or respond appropriately when concerns are raised, and how these experiences can compound the impact of operational stressors. Grounded in research and informed by real-world practice, this session will provide practical strategies to foster healthier organizational climates in the fire service.
