Exploring Trauma and Post-traumatic Growth: One Paramedic’s Journey

Objectives and Summary:

This webinar will explore occupational trauma and post-traumatic growth through the perspective of a Baltimore County paramedic with over 30 years in the field of fire and rescue. Topics will explore the spectrum of traumatic reactions and related mental health disorders, updated data on PTSD, unique themes of fire service trauma including the reactivation of childhood trauma, the role of peer support, and evidence based treatment intervention in the road to recovery. We will also examine the construct of post-traumatic growth as a positive psychological transformation that can occur following the experience of trauma. This webinar is intended for fire service members and mental health clinicians who are interested in working with this population.

Tammy Mastin

Paramedic, Local 1311 Baltimore County
Tammy Mastin is 30-year paramedic and an IAFF member of Baltimore County Firefighters Association. She currently works in the recruitment division, serves as a team lead on her department’s peer support team, and also volunteers with Worldwide Peer Support, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to fire fighters/ EMS personnel who are seeking support. Tammy uses her recovery experience to help other first responders who are struggling with occupational and personal trauma.

Lauren Kosc, LCPC

Behavioral Health Program Clinical Manager, International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF)
Lauren is the Behavioral Health Program Clinical Manager at the IAFF in the Division of Health, Safety and Medicine. Since joining the IAFF in 2017, she has helped lead the rapid expansion of IAFF’s behavioral health program, which includes Peer Support and Resiliency Training, clinician training programs, and the IAFF Center of Excellence treatment center, amongst a host of other programs and services. Since 2008, Lauren has served the community as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

Myrrhanda Jones

Outreach Director, First Responder & Veterans Programs
Myrrhanda Jones is an outreach director for the IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery that opened in March 2017. Myrrhanda represents the Center of Excellence and travels across the country, educating members on the services that the treatment facility provides.
