Utilizing Mindfulness for Operational Performance in the Fire Service

Objectives and Summary:

This course is designed to introduce participants to the use of mindfulness with first responders. The course will cover the research on mindfulness as it relates to behavioral health among the general population and the military before discussing applicable evidence related to first responders. In addition, the presenter will discuss how regularly practicing mindfulness could relate to improved operational performance for fire service members.

Gina Dunckel, Psy.D

Dr. Gina Dunckel is a licensed psychologist who has been practicing in the greater Houston area for over seven years and began specializing in first responders five years ago. She was trained in PTSD clinics at the VA in Houston and Harlingen. Dr. Dunckel runs a busy private practice as well as working with fire and police departments throughout the state of Texas providing consultation for mental health programming, peer support teams, and psychological first aid and sleep hygiene training.

Jeff Cotten

Jeff Cotten is an accomplished fire service professional and dedicated leader, formerly serving as the President of the Pearland Professional Fire Fighters Association (PPFA). With 14 years of experience in the fire service, he has spent the last 5 years as a Driver/Operator for the Pearland Fire Department in Pearland, TX. Jeff has been an integral member of the peer support team for 7 years, currently holding the position of councilman, where he provides vital support to fellow firefighters.

Hannah Elmore, MSW

Sr. Clinical Outreach Coordinator
Hannah Elmore is the Clinical Outreach Coordinator for the IAFF Center of Excellence through Advanced Recovery Systems. Hannah works with first responders through connection to behavioral health resources, providing education, and offering support. Hannah educates on behavioral health topics pertaining to the fire service and first responder communities to departments, peer teams, families and clinicians. Hannah is a certified IAFF Peer Supporter.
