Prior to joining the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Lauren worked as a psychotherapist and clinician in a variety of community and hospital-based behavioral health treatment settings over the past 10 years. Lauren is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the state of Maryland and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP). Lauren started her career in the mental health field as a substance abuse counselor with John Hopkins Medicine, prior to working as an inpatient therapist and PHP/IOP group psychotherapist at Medstar Health. Lauren has also served as a clinical interviewer for the Center of the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD.
After joining the IAFF, Lauren continued to work as a PRN crisis intervention therapist at Medstar Montgomery Medical Center. At the IAFF, Lauren oversees the IAFF Peer Support Training and helped create the IAFF Resiliency Training, while providing daily technical assistance to member affiliates on behavioral health matters. Lauren is responsible for clinical oversight, ongoing consultation, and outcome monitoring for the IAFF Center for Excellence in Behavioral Health and Treatment, where she is also a key blog contributor and editor. Lauren has led critical revisions to emerging behavioral health standards in NFPA 1500 and 1582. Through the IAFF, Lauren also conducts support groups for fire fighters coping with post-traumatic stress and related behavioral health problems.
